The Christmas Controversy
The Celebration of a seventeenth-century English Christmas
de Lucas J.M. Peters
When the English parliament outlawed the celebration of Christmas in 1642, the Christmas-loving Englishmen responded fiercely. Many cities witnessed the full force of the Englishman's craving for Christmas, which included riots and violence. The ban on Christmas also sparked a passionate literary debate.
The Christmas Controversy relates the history of the fight for the right to celebrate Christmas.
It took me just over four years to do the research needed to write 'The Christmas Controversy'. The book now contains references to almost exclusively contemporary publications about Christmas.
