Acerca del libro
I was 3 years old when I started to paint. My mother would sit me in my highchair and give me paper and a paint set and let me create colourful designs and images.
Painting would become a life long obsession for me from then on. I receive great satisfaction from expressing myself through my art and challenging myself by trying to raise the bar and experiment with different styles and genres.
I paint animals, portraits, nudes, landscapes, flowers and conceptual imagery. What is unique about my art is that I use my index finger to apply paint to the canvas. I do this because I have Cerebral Palsy and, although I can hold a brush, I find I can get better control by just using my finger.
A little known fact is that I used to use a paintbrush until I was 18 years old. And then, one day, when cramps wracked my hand and upper arm, which was often the case if I painted too long, I threw down the brush in frustration, dipped my index finger into the paint and applied it directly to the canvas. I finished the picture I was working on in this manner, and never considered going back to the other way.
Many, many times people have asked me how I can paint with my index finger. I think some people are surprised that I don't paint with my mouth or foot, like some other people with disabilities do. I am foremost an artist, though, and the choice to use my index finger to create my art is an extremely personal one. You wouldn't go up to Jackson Pollock and say, "Hey, the dripping thing's cool, but why not use a paintbrush like other artists?"
This book documents, through the brilliant photography of Sarah Elizabeth Creskey, how I painted two separate commissioned pieces: one of two cats spooning, the other a happy looking dog. From choosing the right paints at neighbouring art stores; to having my husband Rob assisting me by putting the paints into my palette; to my cat Rascal spying on me as I paint; to finally putting on the finishing touches of my work; I attempt to share with you, dear reader, as many of the colourful moments of the creative process ... as well as glimpses into my personal life.

Annie's Dandy Note Cards and Artwork
Toronto, Ont Canada
Annie's Dandy Note Cards and Artwork is a home-based art business, where I sell my original artwork as well as note cards. My artwork is unique because I paint with my index finger. Because I have Cerebral Palsy, which limits the level of dexterity I have in my hands, this is the only way I can paint.
