Acerca del libro
Against the backdrop of Expo 2010, "Streets of Shanghai" is a photographic exploration of the processes of growth and globalization in modern China. Largely considered to be modern Shanghai's coming-out party by the Chinese, Expo 2010 is an interesting interlude in China's recent history: it is both the culmination of the Chinese government's modernization efforts during the first decade of the 21st Century and also, the government hopes, a continued catalyst for China's increasing involvement in the global economy. In this work, the author has examined these themes and processes with regard to their effects on the average Chinese citizen, with an especial look at China's growing middle class. The timing of this work is also significant, in that much of Shanghai's older remnants have been demolished in order to make room for the various buildings and pavilions of this Expo--which, in turn, will be demolished to make room for office space after the Expo has closed. By recording this transition, this work serves to document an ephemeral moment bridging the last, lingering glimpses into Shanghai's past with the city's glorious, golden dreams for its future.
