Acerca del libro
Alfred Waterhouse was a 19C English architect responsible for many important public buildings in England, including Manchester Town Hall, the Natural Sciences and History Museum London, and buildings of many Oxford and Cambridge colleges. This book gives a fascinating account of the restoration of the original Waterhouse’s iron gate that formed part of the entrance to Gonville and Caius College Cambridge. Although the gate was installed in 1870, it had been placed into ‘cold storage’ and lost sight of for the past 70 years. The story includes many twists and turns of how the gate was ‘found’ and the explanation for ‘why’ and ‘when’ it was replaced by a wooden door. It is richly illustrated by many present-day and old photographs, including those of Waterhouse’s plans.
