Acerca del libro
Within these pages you will find 20 pieces of art from the Rise&Fall collection, originally shown at 11 events throughout 10 U.S. cities in November 2009. Rise&Fall was created as a revolutionary art and music exhibition to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event series was sponsored by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany Washington, D.C. and Kodak. Part art installation and part DJ event, Rise&Fall featured artwork and descriptions displayed on Kodak digital picture frames. The pieces, from 19 countries and 19 states, interpreted the theme ‘breaking down barriers’. Music performed by renowned Turkish-German DJ/Producer, DJ Ipek Ipekcioglu, accompanied the tour. Her performances are the embodiment of contemporary Germany (post-Wall), smashing musical, cultural and social barriers through an eclectic mix of Middle Eastern sounds and Berlin Electro, drawing on minority subcultures and pop culture in Germany.
The images contained in this book are a cross-section of what was curated from an open call for submissions. Professional and amateur artists alike, who work in a wide range of mediums, were asked to submit digital versions of their art and a short description of what “bringing down walls” or “breaking down barriers” means to them - either as directly related to the Berlin Wall or on a more symbolic, personal, cultural or social level. Digital art itself breaks down the walls of traditional display, allowing a wider range of individuals to contribute to the project as artists and more people to see the exhibition as it traversed the country from New York to Los Angeles.

Our philosophy has always been that art and music are the best ambassadors, building bridges between cultures and connecting people through common experiences. As international relations majors, BOA’s founders believe that in a highly politicized world divided by ethnic, racial, religious and cultural lines, art and music hold the power to cross these lines and educate on a level that goes beyond the mind to the heart and soul.
