The southeastern Alaska coast is mountained, glaciered and forested: It used to be a wilderness, a place where the sublime could mix beauty and terror. Now, it is a stop on a cruise. These photos attempt to bring back a whiff of the old power of Alaska: The Alaska of myth and mind.
Richard Nilsen was art critic for The Arizona Republic in Phoenix, Ariz., for 25 years. He was also the classical music critic, the dance critic, the opera critic, the architecture critic and the backup movie critic. He has written for every section of the newspaper except the Business section. He has been a photographer for more than 40 years. Now retired, he lives in the Blue Ridge.
